Octavious George Underwood born 1881

Octavious George Underwood, like his father before him, sometimes had his first name spelt ‘Octavious‘ but sometimes also had his name spelt without the second ‘o’ as ‘Octavius‘.

His birth was registered in 1880 at Shardlow, and he is listed on the 1881 UK Census at 2 months old with his parents in Derby, on the 1891 Census as a 10 year old scholar in Chelaston, and as a 20 year old labourer in a plaster mine whilst living with his parents at the home of his mother’s father.

He later joined the Grenadier  Guards and died in 1915 in France during the First World War.

The death of Octavious George Underwood is commemorated on the Le Touret war memorial, Pas de Calais, France, and the transcript reads as follows: Private 10535 UNDERWOOD_OCTAVIUS_GEORGE of the 1st Bn. Grenadier Guards died on March 10, 1915. Son of the late Octavius and Agnes Underwood
