Octavious Underwood born 1857

Octavious Underwood was born at Lower Mills, Dursley, Gloucestershire, on 19th October 1857.  His parents were George William Underwood born at Atworth, Wiltshire in 1819, and Matilda Underwood (nee Curtis) born at Bath, Somerset, in 1835, who married at Dursley in 1851 after the death of George’s first wife in 1850.

Octavious Underwood lived with Agnes Meakin  from about 1877, and they were listed as husband and wife on various census entries, but did not actually get married until 18 years later in 1895.  All but one of their six children were born before they got married.  Their first child,  Florence Emily Underwood was born in 1879 and registered with the name of her mother (Meakin).  The Other children were all registered with the name of Underwood, Octavious George Underwood born in 1881, Percival Harry Underwood born in 1883, Orlando Meaking Underwood born in 1884, Alice Eugenie Underwood born in 1889 and Cyril Oliver Underwood born in 1897.

Octavious Underwood was born in 1857 at Dursley.  Although his name was spelt ‘Octavious‘ on his birth certificate, death certificate and on the 1871 census, the second ‘o’ was ommitted when he was listed on the 1861 and 1881 census as ‘Octavius‘.

In the 1861 census he is listed as being a 2 year old scholar, and in the 1871 census he is listed as being a 13 year old scholar, both times living with his parents, George Underwood and Matilda  Underwood in Dursley.  By the 1881 census he is a 23 year old engine fitter in Derby, living with his wife Agnes Underwood, one year old daughter Emily Underwood, and two month old son Octavious Underwood.  By the 1891 census he is described as a 33 year old miner at Chellaston, living with his wife and five children, although there is no actual marriage record until 1895.  By the 1901 census he appears to be living with his wife and four of his children at the home of his father-in-law, Edward Meakin, in chellaston.  His death was registered in 1934 when he was 76 years old.
