Squadron Leader Duncan Stratford Eyre Vines

Duncan Stratford Eyre Vines was born in Hazara, Bengal, India, on 11 June 1902.  He became the Aviation Manager of the Asian Petroleum Company (APC) based at Singapore before World War II, and he became the Commander of the Strait Settlement Volunteer Air Force (SSVAF) with the gazetted rank of Squadron Leader.  He became a member of the O.B.E. in January 1941, but it is not known what happened to him or his family at the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942.   He died at Bridport, Dorset, in 1984.

Doris Myfanwy Underwood twice accompanied the female members of Squadron Leader D. S. E. Vines family when they sailed from the UK to Singapore.

1937 Doris traveled from Southampton to Singapore on the M.S. Boringia which sailed on the 8th November 1937.  She is listed on the passenger list as Nurse and Governess to Delvine Eyre Vives, but that is a spelling mistake as the family name was Vines, not Vives (the error is corrected in the following transcript).

The passenger list shows the party as:
Hilary Mary Vines, 33 years.
Delvine Eyre Vines, 5 years.
Doris MyfanwyThomas, 32 years, Nurse and Governess.
It also shows the last UK address of the whole party as 179 Queens Gate, London S.W.7.

1939 Doris traveled on the ‘Jutlandia‘, a ship owned by East Asiatic Co. Ltd., out of Hull on 26 September 1939 on a ship bound for Bangkok, Thailand, although she herself was bound for Singapore.  She was again traveling with the Vines family.

The passenger list shows the party as:
Hilary Mary Vines, 35 years.
Delvine Eyre Vines, 7 years.
Doris MyfanwyThomas, 33 years, Governess.
It also shows the last UK address of the whole party as Hunts Barn, Mayfield, Sussex.

When Doris Thomas married Richard Underwood in 1940, Mrs D. S. E. Vines is lised in the Strait Times as matron of honour.

Timothy Cambell Eyre Vines was born to Squadron Leader Duncan Stratford Eyre Vines and his wife Hilary Mary Vines in Singapore on 27 March 1940, and is listed in the UK Government Record Office Birth Index for Singapore.  The birth is also listed in the Notices section of the Straits Times dated 28 March 1940
