Spied. An Ann Perkins Detective Agency Novel by Richard Underwood.

Ernie Wright has signed the ‘Official Secrets Act’ and been recruited by GCHQ, but that doesn’t stop him from being arrested when he is found with his hands around the neck of his neighbour’s dead body.

Terrorists, diamonds, murders and mayhem abound in this stand alone third and final book in the Ann Perkins Detective Agency series which ties up all the lose ends and provides a fitting climax.

Baz accompanied him to have his picture taken and a pass issued. He’d settled for being a private detective, but he’d always wanted to be a James Bond type of spy with all sorts of special gadgets to get him out of trouble.

“What will my code name be, Baz?”

“Code name? Why would you need a code name?”

“007, M, Q. I thought everyone had a code name.”

Baz laughed. “Not everyone. People have nicknames like they do in all offices, and that’s why everyone calls me Baz. You’ll be Ann Perkins. That’s the name that’ll be on your ID, and there’s no need for an additional code name.”

“I suppose an Aston Martin is out of the question?”

“Have you not heard about austerity? A new bike would be pushing it. You’ll use your own car like the rest of us. There is no limit when it comes to state-of-the-art surveillance and hacking equipment, but when it comes to stuff in the real world, you’ll just have to make do with what you’ve got.”

“So, no code name and no Aston Martin. I’m regretting taking on this assignment already. At least the pay will be worth having.”

Baz looked at him with a grin. “Of course! You’ll receive the same salary as every other junior civil servant gets. Administrative Assistants are the backbone of our service, and are excellently remunerated.”

“What about expenses?”

“The security service will pay your expenses in cash. A standard amount up front that doesn’t need to be accounted for, and a bank debit card in the name of a fictitious company for any larger items you may need.”

“Like an Aston Martin?”

“Like petrol if you have to follow someone.”

“How about the latest iPhone?”

“We’ll be providing you with an iPhone, but it won’t be the latest.”

“So, no real perks!”

“Standard pay. Standard expenses. Standard perks. What you will receive is the undying gratitude of the Government.”

“A medal?”

“Not even a medal.”

Being a spy was not turning out how Ernie had imagined.
